Paul Lockhart

Perhaps no mathematician has had a greater influence on my thinking about math, my appreciation for it, and my approach to classroom teaching than Paul Lockhart.  He and I worked together in the Math department at Saint Ann's School, but I first met him through his writing.  If you have not yet, I greatly encourage you to read his books.  They are eye-opening, charming, and wonderfully true.  (And uncompromisingly true to Paul himself).

This is some fantastic mathematical writing, and I recommend it to everyone.  Lockhart tells a beautiful mathematical story, building up ideas and truths as he goes, but he leaves lots to do for the reader, so get ready to work on some real problems.
